The Okapi

The okapi is a short-necked giraffe with zebra stripes on the legs. It lives in the rainforests of Congo and sometimes eats clay to soothe its inner rumblings. I on the other hand live in Bucharest, Romania, I consume clay through my pores and sometimes I am consumed by it. I like hardware stores for the tranquility of the straight-forwardness along the aisles and I wish I could make everything in one go. I work on the potter’s wheel, throwing is my favourite part of the process, making and discovering glazes is growing on me.

Frequently asked questions

Are your items food safe and dishwasher safe?

Ceramic food safety hinges on chemical stability and proper firing. To ensure my items are completely safe and durable for everyday use, I rely on scientifically proven glaze chemistry:

  • Stable Formulation: I make sure my glazes that are verified as chemically stable using the U.M.F. (Unity Molecular Formula) calculation. This molecular evaluation allows to predict how a glaze will behave based on the exact ratio of its elements.
  • Firing Standards: All pieces are fired to full maturity.
  • Minimal Metal Oxides: I limit the concentrations of oxides in my recipes.
  • Acid Resistance: I conduct leach tests using acid solutions to ensure no harmful substances break down or leach, even when exposed to coffee or citrus.
  • Real-World test: I use my own cups every day to personally verify that their finish remains unchanged over time.

Care Instructions: I regularly wash the items I have at home in the dishwasher and I can assure they have not been affected in any way after dozens of washing cycles. However, I cannot guarantee that they would not be affected by any combination of detergent and temperature. Also, keep in mind washing that washing your ceramics by hand is always the best way to prevent chipping, scratching, or long-term wear.

What materials do you use?
